PW Loves D&G

Our first review is in, and Publisher’s Weekly loves us (although the talking dogs, not so much).  We got a starred review!  This is huge.  We are very happy.  The review:

Dogs and Goddesses
Jennifer Crusie, Anne Stuart and Lani Diane Rich.
St.Martin’s Paperbacks, $7.99 (400p) ISBN 978-0-312-94437-7

Don’t be put off by the talking dogs; clever (human) dialogue and sassy heroines make this joint novel an amusing standout. After meeting at a local dog obedience-training session, coffeehouse owner Abby, Web writer Daisy and history professor Shar become fast friends. They also discover that the dog trainer is the Mesopotamian goddess Kammani, determined to rule the world like she did 4,000 years ago. Chosen as Kammani’s priestesses, Abby, Daisy and Shar aren’t quite ready to support the goddess’s destructive goals, even when she grants them magical powers including the ability to understand their dogs. Established authors Crusie (Charlie All Night), Stuart (Fire and Ice) and Rich (Wish You Were Here) turn this quirky charmer into an enjoyable paranormal romp that’s definitely not just for dog lovers. (Feb.)

This is the second hint we’ve had that D&G is giving good vibe. The first one was when our British publisher decided to publish the book uncut even though it’s too long for their line. We figured they must really like it to bend the rules like that.  And now PW likes it.

So far, so great . . .

Congrats on the great review! I can’t wait ’til it comes out and we can finally read it!

Out of curiosity, when siting your previous works, why do you think they picked new books for Lani and Krissie but reached all the way back to the nineties for Jenny?

  4. me December 8th, 2008 3:09 pm

Good news! Well of course it’s great! Can’t wait to see for myself!

  5. Jenny December 8th, 2008 3:48 pm

I know, isn’t it weird that they picked up Charlie as my title? No idea why.

Excellent news! I have to admit that, while I will, of course, read anything written by you, I do not normally seek out dog (or cat, or parrot, or angel) books. So maybe that’s why the opening and closing - to ensure that the book gets play beyond the canine faithful.

But it’s decidedly strange that they looked past ALL the FABULOUS recent books: is Charlie All Night the latest single-author reissue, perhaps?

Isn’t the book coming out in February?

    Yay! Fabulous news! Congratulations.
Can’t wait to get my hands on a copy. And Charlie, well, I love Charlie All Night so much I have two copies. Not sure why, but maybe just in case one wears out. ; )

Outstanding news! Great news! Now all we have to do is wait to get our hands on a copy. Congratulations!

YAY!!!! When is the “lay-down” date???

  10. Lou December 8th, 2008 5:35 pm

Oops - how did a “j” end up at the end of my name? Typing too fast because of the excitement!!

  11. Lou December 8th, 2008 6:19 pm

Oh man, now my first comment has disappeared.

Jenny - Do you have the official “lay-down” date for D&G yet??

  12. Laura Fitzgerald December 8th, 2008 7:33 pm

Congratulations! I have to say, Charlie All Night was the first Crusie book I ever read, and I still consider it one of my very favorites.

I’m SO happy it’s 400 pages! The longer they are, the longer I get to enjoy them for the first time. And the second, and…

  14. Jenny December 8th, 2008 11:27 pm

There isn’t a laydown for D&G. Those suckers are expensive so unless they’re trying to put a book on the NYT, pubilshers don’t bother especially since bookstores break them all the time anyway.

But the official pub date is Feb. 3. Booksellers can put them out as soon as they get them, if they want to. Or let them sit in the back room for an extra week if they want to. But somewhere around Feb. 3, D&G will hit the shelves.

Oops - got excited too and posted it somehow before it was complete. Must go into Rosemary’s and order me a copy :-)

400 pages is the size of WTT! Yay!!! Hmm.. should I time my trip to the U.S. to correspond to the release date of this book, or of the software I develop? Decisions, decisions…

Best of luck with it, guys. I hope you hit it out of the ball park!

Wow! Good things really do come to those who wait. I am so excited. In the early days, I worried that you all would change your mind. Funny about Charlie. It’s one of my favorites also.

  19. lady T December 9th, 2008 10:23 pm

Hurray! So excited. Gotta wait ’til Feb. though. Okay. And Congratulations!

I’m looking forward to purchasing my copy in February when the book is available.

Yay! Been reading my oldie/goodie Cruisies to tide me over through Christmas/New Year’s without sons at home and husband gearing self for walk on Appalachian Trail in late April. Need sex, romance, and contented feeling of eating just enough chocolate that comes from reading what looks REALLY fun and gives rosy glow to me.
