Ta Da: The Cover!

The tagline, in case you can’t read it, is “Dangerous men.  Dark powers.  Dog biscuits.  They have it all.”

Love the idea (the trio definitely reminds me of Charmed), but not digging the prominence of the names. Maybe it’s just the colors, but my eyes had a hard time getting past the blue to the title in white. Although I remember from the UMF blog that collaborations are a harder sale than single authors, so maybe you’re trying to draw on the pull of your individual fans?

    WOW!

    Looks great!

  3. Courtney July 12th, 2008 10:36 pm

That’s verra purty. Love the colors and all the swirls-and especially the three paws at the top. The silhouettes kinda remind me of “Charlie’s Angels,” however, and I haven’t decided if that’s a good thing or a bad thing. Love the tagline. As far as the contest-how about just a raffle style drawing, where everybody who submitted an idea gets a “ticket.”

  4. Azucena July 12th, 2008 11:20 pm

    i LOOOOOOOOOOOVE it!

  5. Lily C July 13th, 2008 5:30 pm

I like it. Like Courtney said, a little bit Charlie’s Angels, but sunnier and funkier. And it would make me pick it up if I saw it in a book shop. And the tagline is definitely intriguing.

  6. Melissa July 13th, 2008 9:30 pm

Yes, love it. And did I miss the release date? Because really I’ve been waiting on this book forever.

  7. Office Wench Cherry July 13th, 2008 10:05 pm

Inneresting. Totally not what I was expecting but it wil catch attention in bookstores and that’s the main thing. I’ll have to make sure my library gets a copy (I’m the Chair of the Board or as my husband says Boss of the Library)

  8. Jenny July 13th, 2008 10:07 pm

Whoa, boss of the library. That’s power.

The figures used to be much more mudflap girls, so we asked for hips and power and got this. I think it’s probably the best compromise. Publishers like skinny little things on their covers, so at least we got the hips.

  9. AndreaS July 13th, 2008 10:27 pm

Oh. I like that a lot. The cover is wonderful. And the tagline is fun. w00t!

I’m waiting in mad anticipation for this book.

  10. Caryle July 13th, 2008 11:12 pm

You know, I mostly really like it, but it is a bit Charlie’s Angels for me. I’m especially bothered that they all look like 20-somethings with all that long hair. Does Shar have long hair?? Thank goodness you asked for more hips! They still look like size 2s (she says somewhat bitterly) But you know, it really is quite pretty. :)

As for the contest, I say assign everyone who entered a number, throw them in a hat, and the person drawn wins.

I’m seeing Charlie’s Angels in a good way. Because who wouldn’t pick up something with the CA silhouettes on it? I kinda agree with the eyes not shifting from blue names to white title, but since it’s the names that’ll sell the book I’m not seeing it as a problem. LOVE the lotus paws. Still love the old designs from your graphic design goddess, but this’ll do, this’ll do. Orange is my favorite color, so aside from bringing those stylized graphics back as sidebar art, I can’t see how you would improve on this site.

  12. Strop July 14th, 2008 3:59 am

I really like the ‘dog biscuits’ bit. That would sell it to me.

  13. Stephanie Burgis July 14th, 2008 5:17 am

Ooh, I love this! It’s certainly hitting straight to my demographic - early 30s, with dog, loving romance, women’s fic, and fantasy! I would definitely gravitate to this on a bookshelf.

  14. me July 14th, 2008 9:50 am

It really is a good tagline.
I too thought Charlie’s Angels, and I’m hearing 70’s music (Age of Aquarius, maybe) in the background. Kinda psychodelic. But there IS KoolAid, so I guess that works. I like it.

  15. Pam July 14th, 2008 11:34 am

I would cross the bookstore to pick that up. Of course, if the paws were embossed or in foil, I would run across the bookstore–I do like my frills.

    Great tagline, too.

  16. Diane L July 14th, 2008 3:46 pm

I have to agree with the too-much-Charlie’s-Angels crowd. The person picking up this book is going to expect dangerous men foiled by blond Charlie’s Angels detectives, not Mesopotamian myths and college professors.

However, knowing not to judge a book by its cover, I cannot wait for it!!!

  17. Rebecca July 14th, 2008 8:02 pm

Hips are good… wish the poses were a little more powerful/goddess-y and not so “Price is Right Model,” but I like the colors, the font and the pawprints. The tagline doesn’t do it for me at all, but it’s the names that are going to sell the book anyway, so who cares? :-)

  18. Marcia in OK July 15th, 2008 3:31 pm

OK - so looking at that cover has me thinking Hippie Chicks and lava lamps and I have the Age of Aquarius looping as background music.

To update the site, the brown has got to go, or change shades/tones considerably. I’d like to see the blue played up quite a bit.

Nothing on the site or the book cover is making the “link” to ancient times and place for me.

It does have the same whimsical feel as the Miss Fortunes book. And Yellow is my very favorite color and I’d definitely stop and look at this one in the store. (Of course, I know about the book, and will have it pre-ordered and delivered as soon as possible.)

    I like the tag line.

  19. Kira July 15th, 2008 5:24 pm

VERY hot cover, should market well. You got romance, mysticism, and paw prints, check, check, check - that should get the right people to pick it up and turn it into the best seller you guys deserve. Love the tag line! I don’t see why we need a reward, if we didn’t come up with what you needed - unless helping with the process of elimination counts?

  20. S July 15th, 2008 5:46 pm

It’s fabulous. Lurve the pawprints in particular. Now hurry up and get it into bookshops so I can get my own hot l’il paws on it.

  21. Diane (TT) July 17th, 2008 1:57 pm

A definite ’70s vibe to the cover, but it’s very fun and noticeable. I was thinking about a ziggurat for the cover, but that kind of static angular shape (or the more bas-relief and less Charlie’s Angels look for the Goddesses) would a) be trying to tell too much story in the cover and probably just confuse and b) make it less lively and enticing. Probably.

I don’t mind the brown for the frame, it’s coat-colored!

  22. Jenny July 17th, 2008 5:47 pm

See Lani kept saying 70s and we all told her she was delusional. She’s somewhere tapping her foot right now.

Sorry I was so slow on approving comments. Been one of those weeks.

As for Charlie’s Angels, when Mollie looked at the original cover she said it looked like a box of tea. We asked for hips and goddess and kick ass and got this. Sometimes you have to pick your battles. Sigh.

And we’ll still use the art for the store in the book. We love that first art. But this will sell more books, we’re betting. And since none of it takes place in ancient times, it’s good that the book doesn’t look “old.”

  23. me July 17th, 2008 7:30 pm

Just found this on Amazon, says it’s due February 3!! I’m marking my calendar now.

  24. Bonnie C July 29th, 2008 10:08 am

Wow. There’s a lot of anti-Angels angst out there. How unfortunate.

See, I too, saw the three figures and thought Charlie’s Angels, but instead of groaning it made me giggle. A lot. And I very much needed a giggle this morning. I like it very much. :D

As far as the tagline contest, I agree with the person way up there who says put everyone in a hat lottery style.

  25. Mariyn K August 3rd, 2008 10:02 pm

So… Who is the mystery goddess? Was it Krissie?
Did I miss this somewhere? Maybe you want to tell me to shut up and wait. Not that I have a choice.

  26. shar August 6th, 2008 12:27 pm

Looks great, but agree with the blue names to white title comment, could it be reversed to white author names to blue title. I’m older so instead of charmed, the three goddesses remind me of the old Charley’s Angels opening. Cannot wait for publication.

  27. Tamar August 10th, 2008 7:09 am

    So where’s Chapter 3??

  28. Caryn August 13th, 2008 12:21 pm

LOVE it!!! Can’t wait until it’s out.

  29. Charlene Teglia August 15th, 2008 1:51 pm

Oh, what a fun cover. The tagline works, too!

  30. Jenny August 18th, 2008 12:32 am

    Right, right, Chapter 3.
Hey, it’s only been six weeks. And we had the copy edit to do. And uh, other stuff.

I’ll get Chapter 3 up this week. I hope.

  31. Tamar September 16th, 2008 2:08 am

I love you ladies, but I’m dying here! Are you sure it’s a feb publishing date? That’s ages from now…!

  32. Stephanie September 26th, 2008 2:23 pm

love it! i love the blue for the authors and the paws. very cute!

  33. Kimberly October 13th, 2008 5:06 pm

Okay, I’m new to Jennifer Cruisie…..but last May, someone, somewhere left a book (I travel….a lot) as I was desperate (nothing left to read but the cereal box), I grabbed the book and dashed to the airport. Seriously, I wet myself laughing so hard on a transcontinental flight ( so not pretty). When I got home, I ordered every Cruisie book I could find. I even bought the Mayer/Cruisie collaberations. So, I will anxiously await the arrival of this book and quite frankly don’t give a rats ass about the cover….if Cruisie’s name is prominently displayed on it…I’ll buy it.

  34. Eve November 2nd, 2008 4:52 pm

Sorry to be the odd one out but I’m not a fan of the cover. It’s just like every icky chicklit book out there - except the writing is so exceptional, it doesn’t fit. What happened to one of the first covers? the beautiful graphics with similar colors but the three ladies looked like vases or similar. I thought that was so original and inspiring/relatable? btw this all coming from a skinny chick so no repressed emotions about food here

  35. Eve November 2nd, 2008 4:55 pm

p.s. Kimberly - do tell the airplane story? also, what was the first book? and I’m akin in spirit about Jenny being the most fantastic writer of the genre - her books are the only ones I read half a dozen times, yes each and no, it’s not sad…per se

  36. Katie November 4th, 2008 10:08 pm

Charlie’s Angels is a very good thing … the dog/Angel combo makes it a winner in my book…
