D&G, the Tagline Contest

So we need a tagline for Dogs and Goddesses. Mollie will be sending out the prize: a fabulous tea set. I’d show you a picture of it BUT WORDPRESS WON”T LET ME UPLOAD PICTURES (yes, I did click the little media box; there’s a glitch in the programming and evidently many of us cannot upload unless we link to another site, which is not helpful). It’s a Tea Forté set that includes a café cup, wooden oval serving tray and tea tray with a sampler tin containing six Tea Forté silken tea infusers. It’s really lovely. You should see the picture.

Now the contest. If you’ve been reading this blog, you already know what Dogs and Goddesses about. If you haven’t, the Chapter One and Chapter Two are up here now, soon to be followed by Chapter Three. It’s about three women who find out they’re goddesses. Because their dogs talk to them. Trouble ensues.

So we need a short tagline because there are three names, a title, and the words “A Novel” on there already and it’s a mass market paperback cover which means it’s small. Deadline for entries is Monday 10 AM ET. Because that’s when I have to give them to Jen.

Oh and we have the first pass at the cover, but it’s not quite right yet. Really good start, though.

Dogs and Goddesses: the tagline. HELP.

Sometimes a woman doesn’t just smell divine. Sometimes it takes a dog to point out that she really is.

I’m in love with this book already and can’t WAIT until I can read the whole thing. :o) Here are my tagline ideas so far:

    Divinity. Trinity. Caninity.
    They’re in deep doggy woo-woo.
    Divinity unleashed.

Also, you mention a problem loading a photo. Here’s a simple process you might want to try — ignore this if I misunderstood and you already know this process! :o)

1 - Open a free account at either Flickr.com or Photobucket. I’m partial to Flickr.

2 - Upload your photo of the cover. The system at either site will show you the URL and the code to use. (In Flickr, you just go to the photo’s page after uploading, select the “All Sizes” link that’s in tiny print right above the picture, and then select the photo size you want; you’ll then see an option to copy all the code you’ll need to display the photo — it’s more than just the URL.)

3 - Then in WordPress, do these things (your steps may differ slightly if you’re using a later version of WP; I haven’t upgraded yet):
    * Use “Manage” to find this post.
    * Open it in “Edit.”
    * Use the “Code” tab for that post (not the “Visual” tab).
    * Paste the code where you want the photo to show.
    * Select “Save” for your post; you’re done.

You can always go back to the post again in “Edit” mode and select the little tree icon if you want to edit whether the photo is displayed alone or with the text wrapped around it (Alignment Left, or Alignment Right). Otherwise, the default is to display the photo on a line by itself.

    Hope that helps?

    And here are three more:

    Talk to the paw.
    All dogs have their deity.
    Dog-eared divinity.

Claiming inner power - and listening to the dog.

    If these dogs could talk…

Out of the mouths of dogs … (but that sounds a little slobbery)

Unleashing the inner Goddess - and listening to the dog.

I haven’t figured out how to tie in the men, yet - and it IS a romance (or, rather, three).

  13. Sheryl June 9th, 2008 8:52 pm

Dogs and Goddesses. What more could three smart funny women want?

Dogs and Goddesses. Coming to wreak havoc in a life near you.

Delusions of goddess? Not for them.

  17. Kensignton June 10th, 2008 10:56 pm

    1. Because no one gets between a Goddess and her dog.

    2. Dogs & Godesses: Loyal, powerful, and respond the same way to obedience classes.

    (There’s a Goddess that’s a ‘bad-guy’ type in here to, right?)

    3. Because man’s best friend is one Goddesses worst nightmare.

    I’ll keep working on it…

  18. Kensington June 10th, 2008 11:06 pm

Okay, here’s a few you might not be allowed to use:

    1. “Sometimes it takes a bitch to make a Goddess.”

    2. “Divinity’s a bitch.”

And now back to being reasonable. Or, well, printable at any rate.

ok, that was awful…i take it back!

  30. Kira June 20th, 2008 2:11 am

It’s probably less important that it represent the book, and more important that it attracts the type of person you think will buy the book.

I’m thinking you’re aiming for the women’s fun-read romance market rather than the fantasy/myth market?

  31. Jenny June 20th, 2008 11:23 am

    That’s it, exactly, Kira.

Jen’s still muling the taglines over and we gave her some more, but it’s a really tough book to tag because it’s romance/paranormal/sisterhood/dogs, and the cover is already really crowded so the tagline has to be short. We used “There’s magic in the night” for UMF, and that worked beautifully, I though, but for this one, we’re kind of flailing around. Readers can probably get the paranormal and the dog thing from the title, and the cover-in-progress has the silhouette of three women on it, so Jen wants the tag to hit the romance. Yes, I could have mentioned that earlier, but I didn’t KNOW.

We’re as confused as you are. Taglines are not easy and this book has so many identities that it’s really tough to capture in six or seven words.

  32. BCB June 20th, 2008 11:50 pm

Love my dog, love my inner goddess.

There you go, romance in seven words.

Or does that sound like they’ll be doing things to their dogs?

I’m better at asking probing questions…

  38. Kelsie June 22nd, 2008 6:57 pm

Dogs and Goddesses - What happens when goddesses meet their match…

Dogs and Goddesses - Ancient Mesopotamian love

Dogs and Goddesses - Falling head over paws in love

Dogs and Goddesses - A tale of three divine women falling in love

Dogs and Goddesses - Prepare to wag your tail for this love story

  39. Sheryl June 24th, 2008 2:47 pm

I vote for Erica’s answer - what more could a man want.

Dogs and Goddesses - and the hot men who love them
Dogs and Goddesses - the men will never be the same
Dogs and Goddesses - the men don’t stand a chance
Dogs and Goddesses make romance a little more interesting.

  40. Jenny June 24th, 2008 5:39 pm

I think we have a tagline. Stay tuned.

  42. Kari July 1st, 2008 5:23 pm

hahaha, i LOVE “Divinity’s a Bitch.” I would absolutely buy a book with that tagline. But if that’s too racy what about something like:

“Look out men, Dog’s brought a new best friend…”

    or

“Cause love’s more fun with a little Bark and Bite”

    or

“Love’s about to bark up a new kind of tree”

… hmm what other dog references can i shamelessly co-opt? =)
