Collage 2: The First Draft

I posted the beginning of the collage when I was trying to capture the feel of the book, but we’re writing this so fast now that I’m not layering the collage the way I usually do.  I’ll probably do more on it while we wait for the betas, plus we’re going to have art from Mara very, very soon which is so exciting and which will end up on there, too. But in the meantime, here’s what’s on the collage:

DG Collage

It’s actually bigger than this because there’s a lot more sky and a sun, but this is the only place that’s really collaged yet. Also since I’m writing Shar, it’s really Shar’s collage, not a true Dogs and Goddesses collage, a memory jogger for me of Shar’s world.

We’re so close to being done with a first draft. VERY exciting.

I’ve seen your other collages, and this one seems to be much heavier on the faces than others. Is there something about this book that makes it much more “people up front”?

Thanks for sharing it. It’s always interesting to see the creative process come out in ways besides writing.

This part of the collage is a memory jogger for me. I have to keep in my head not just my characters but my collaborators’ and I have to see their characters the way they see them, not the way the characters would evolve in my head. So I really need pix of all the characters first.

Next week, I’ll start putting in the motifs and plot elements, trying to get the feel of the whole story. This week we’re writing like demons, trying to have the entire rough/DLD draft by Monday.

I noticed the lots of faces, too - even outweighing the dogs, which I wouldn’t have expected. but there are lots of cute dogs, too, and the little sculpted dog…

Very excited about the near-completion of the first draft, also!

I notice that three steps have color themes — blue stars ((?) my monitor is a bit small) and red and yellow flowers. Are each of these steps devoted solely to the each of the three main characters?
Alo, who is Mara? I must have missed that post.

Yep, Abby is amber, Daisy is carnelian, and Shar is lapis. And their symbols are the sun, the flower, and the star.

Mara is Mara Lubell who does a lot of design work for me. She did the Agnes logo and the Crusie-Mayer logo, and she works with Mollie designing websites (Anne Stuart, Susan Scott, Pat Gaffney). She’s wonderful. We’ll have the art for D&G up fairly soon, probably in the next two weeks.

I thought Shar’s placeholder was Tina Fey. Am I just not seeing her or did Shar take over even her placeholder?

I started with Cate Blanchett but I couldn’t get the character off the ground so I switched to Fey, just to get enough snark to get the character started. But it didn’t work. Then Shar became Shar on her own, and I went back to Blanchett as a placeholder.

Wow - that sucker has evolved!!!

Okay this is completely off topic and I’m posting it here because your spam filter is finding me exceedingly tasty back on Argh, Jenny. Saw Pushing Daisies advertised on TV last night as coming in 08!!!! Did a little happy snoopy dance. The family looked at me blankly.
    But I knew :-)

    Oh, wonderful!
    You’re going to love it.

Spam filter, huh? Going in there is like dumpster diving behind a porn and drug store. But for you . . .

    [Later]
Okay, DUG, your Aussie tush is out of the filter. Off to take a shower; you know how that spam smell clings . . .

Yup, with you on the shower.
