Wolfie
I volunteered for Dachshund Rescue of Ohio and they sent me after this little one-year-old, imbred, puppy-mill, longhaired, silver dapple dachshund. He was in his third home in a year, poor thing. So I drove up and got him and then brought him back to my house for the night. The poor baby shook until he got into the house, and then he met the other three dogs–they weren’t impressed–and the cats–they also weren’t impressed but he didn’t chase them–and had a bite to eat and curled up on my bed with me and went to sleep. In the morning, he looked at me with those big brown eyes that are way too close together over his too-narrow nose, his little chicklet-overbite making him even more pathetic, and I called Dachshund Rescue and said, “I’m keeping him.”
Oddly, they never sent me to pick up another dog.
So now Wolfie is in Dogs and Goddesses as Shar’s dog, and I’m watching him all the time to see how he moves, and listening to his whines and barks, and basically trying to put the physical Wolfie on the page. All that watching is making him nervous, but he’s always been paranoid, so it’s not a big change. Oh, and even though I was his fourth owner in his first year, he’s been with us now for six years. So he’s calmer. Actually, as I type this, he’s sacked out on the bed with the cat. They have a strange and wonderful relationship, which pretty sums up Wolfie: strange and wonderful.

Isn’t that Steve? Where’s his vest?
I really hope I get to read this book someday…
This is why I could never foster dogs.
Steve was modeled on Wolfie, but he wasn’t Wolfie. There was no vest in real life.
Wolfie is Wolfie, although he hasn’t actually spoken to me yet (I didn’t drink the Kool-aid). Also my straight-laced colleagues made me take out the part about his gray teddy bear that he carries around with him and humps while I watch TV. When I thought about it, since he was going to be talking, it was probably best that that just stay part of Wolfie’s back story. WAY back.
LOL that would be too funny to read Wolfie’s innermost thoughts about his binkie.
Wolfie: Oh look, Oprah’s on. Have you seen my teddy bear?
Okay maybe I can see why the others might be squeamish about that…
I like the shot of Wolfie in the header. Looks like he’s smiling.
My dog says Arf! to your dog.
About that bear: Everyone needs a hobby.
So my dog is not the only one with a “special friend”?
I’m fairly strait-laced myself, and let me tell you (and I am), having a dog that humps blankies is forcing me to abandon my tight suits and uncomfortable shoes.
Having spent this year following along with the HWSW-2007 Writer’s workshop . . . I’m laughing hysterically about Wolfie’s way-back backstory
It’s good to see that I am not the only one with a neurotic dog (or two)…
at least your dog uses an inanimate object. my Cookie liked to hump my leg. “no, no sweetie, use the couch please”
LOL, Sheri, you are not alone. So many puppies go through so much trauma, it’s a miracle that most of them turn into sweet loving dogs — with a few tics and quirks, true. Dog nature — they are such optimists, and seem more willing to shed their emotional baggage in a good situation.
BTW, Wolfie is adorable. He doesn’t *look* like a sex maniac (-:.
What does a sex maniac dog look like? I have a cat who LOVES his blanket. The dog has, to the best of my knowledge, never exhibited such behaviour. Perhaps he only engages in private.
I adore this blog. Dogs and goddesses - what more could a reader ask for - besides another excerpt?
well, Sheryl, sex maniac dogs normally have a gleam in their eye when they see anything that could be used as a…release valve for their feelings.
i don’t think one of my cats does anything like that. the only times she moves is to go pee. Poor Girl. never had a chance to experience “alone time”.
FYI to the webmaster - the link for Eileen Dreyer under “People We Like” has an extra http:// so the link doesn’t work.
Hey, anonymous - works on this end! What browser are you using?
Sorry, Lani, I read that last night and fixed it. Should have taken the comment off and thanked anon but it was 4AM so . . .
