If you want to do everything you can to try and prevent fleas from lingering on your pet then there are a couple of things that you can do about this. The first thing that you should do is look into any topical flea treatment that is available. This can be applied as a cream or even a liquid, and you put this into your dog’s back right between the shoulder blades. It may be a good idea for you to check with your vet to find out which flea treatment you should be using and how much to give them as well. The main reason why the flea treatment is applied between the dog’s shoulder blades is because this is one of the few areas they can’t reach when it’s applied, so it has plenty of time to soak in properly.
The next thing you can do is to put a flea collar on your dog. Flea collars help to stop the fleas from taking up residence, but you need to put them on properly if you want them to work. You should be able to fit two fingers behind your dog’s collar, and it shouldn’t be tighter or any looser than this. You will also need to read the instructions on the collar, because some collars aren’t as effective if they do happen to get wet. Of course, if the collar starts to irritate your dog then take it off right away and opt for a topical treatment instead.
And lastly, you have the oral treatment method. You can get this in the form of a pill and you’ll feed it to your dog once every month. It contains an inhibitor and this helps to make sure that flea eggs don’t hatch on your dog. The problem with this is that it doesn’t stop the adult fleas, but it does stop them from multiplying. For this reason, if your dog hates topical treatment and a flea collar isn’t an option, you can certainly consider this. Although it may take longer for it to work when compared with other solutions, you are guaranteed that your flea problem stops with the adult fleas.
